Gluten Free is the New Normal !

How many times have you come across the term gluten-free in a news article, while scrolling through Facebook, or even while chit-chatting with family members or friends?

I'm sure PLENTY!!

But do you know what gluten really means and why a gluten-free diet is making all the headlines??!

Let me take you through it one step at a time.

• What is gluten?

Gluten is a type of protein commonly found in wheat, rye, barley, and sometimes oats. Gluten gives these grains the ability and elasticity to hold together and helps extend their shelf life.

• Why is eliminating or reducing gluten from our diet important?

Humans have digestive enzymes that help us break down food but the problem arises because these enzymes can't completely break down gluten. Undigested gluten makes its way to the small intestine and makes the digestive process difficult and burdensome for the body

, which may or may not cause unpleasant symptoms.

• What is a gluten-free diet?

A gluten-free diet focuses on avoiding gluten consumption entirely. It means eating foods that do not contain gluten like rice, pulses, milk, fruits, vegetables, meat, nuts, etc.

Many eliminate gluten because of a Celiac Disease diagnosis, Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity, Gluten Ataxia, or an Autoimmune Disease. For some, it is related to an allergy to wheat. Still, others find that eating gluten-free eliminates inflammation in their body, or they simply feel better not eating gluten. Whatever your reason for eliminating gluten, learning to consume a healthy and delicious diet, without it can surely be intimidating.
